Oakey Side Projects

Postby cs15 » Fri Jan 06, 2017 9:22 pm

Thought it would be good to have a Philip solo/side projects thread for mixes etc.

I like these 2 mixes of TUTBTF

This Used To Be The Future (JCRZ Saturday Extended Remix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ji1S19Og0KQ

This Used To Be The Future (Cristian Thomas Tribexciting Mix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX_XxaIOggQ

This Used To Be The Future (Demo - No Philip)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeRahd9dW-M

I'd really like to hear a decent remix of 'Symmetry' with LB. Anyone got any?

Favourite Oakey collab for me is the one with Alex Gold;

Looove the booming bassline, fits well with Oakey's voice.

I'm amazed that nobody has made a remix of 'Symmetry'. It's such a great track and yet no mixes, no extended version etc. Weird.

It's a real shame that TUTBTF was relegated to disc 2 of the special edition of Yes as it was good enough to be a single.

It's probably one of the best tracks they have produced in yonks. Both Electric and Super are piss poor with the exception of a handful of tracks. Yes is a bit of a masterpiece and even Elysium has some brilliant, standout tracks with 'Winner' being it's only real dud track.

Perhaps TUTBTF will get a higher profile if/when a best of Philip Oakey album ever gets a release.

If you want to list them all, you miss all the Moroder stuff and what about these two? - I classify them as side projects, even if most of the band is participating:

Nic Fury - Amor Secreto (Oakey, Burden, Callis).
7" single (83)
A1 Amor Secreto
B1 Por Fin, Esto Es

Vic Reeves - Abide With Me (Oakey, Sulley, Catherall)
7" single (91)
A Abide With Me (Edit)
B Black Night (Edit)

12" single (91)
A1 Abide With Me (12” Mix)
A2 Abide With Me (Holy Dub)
B1 Black Night (Full Length 7”)
B2 Abide With Me (Edit)

Yep, I really like it too. Still listen to it fairly regularly.

It's a good track, but it owes so much to the original by Talk Talk, which I think is better.

@Stig: I have that Nick Fury record, but no recollection of where I got it. I found the Vic Reeves CD single in a charity shop around 2003, I think it's only Black Night that had League involvement?

If I *had to* rank the Oakey solo stuff it'd look a lot like this:

1. Together In Electric Dreams (just genius)
2. Rock'N'Roll is Dead
3. Symmetry
4. This Used To Be The Future
5. Goodbye Bad Times
6. First Man In Space
7. 2am
8. Brand New Love (Take A Chance)
9. Now
10. LA Today
11. Shake It Up
12. Be My Lover Now
13. Why Must The Show Go On?
14. What Comes After Goodbye
15. In Transit
16. Valerie

I suppose there aren't any remixes of Symmetry because it wasn't a single.

This is the best new thread of 2017 ;) .

This actually claims to be a mix:

Haven't revisited the original so I can't be sure but it does sound to be a bit different.

the moroder stuff is a given and easy to find.

it's other tracks like these that are notaable, however, without phil singing,
it's not much of an addition to his other work that is much more enjoyable.

Is this the right song?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wwfRQDce5SI

If it is, what a load of crap. Is it supposed to be a 'comedy' song?

Yeah, it's a given, but for completion, you have to mention them all

A side project is a side project, and I'm sure Philip put more work into this, than just singing a few lines on a PSB track.

It's kinda like a poor man's 'I Don't Depend On You'. The singing is just awful that's why I thought it might be a sort of comedy thing? Nobody sings that badly.

That Nick Fury thing is really bad. Fuck - how could Oakey, Burden and Callis have been involved.

A quick rifle through my Paypal receipts showed that I bought it from Spain in 2006 for 10 euros =|
