Human League Live - 23rd February 1979

Postby redblue100 » Sat Feb 04, 2017 6:39 pm

I found this poster in the loft at my student house in Sheffield in 1989. It's been in my loft ever since and to honest I had forgotten about it! Financial circumstances dictate it needs to head for eBay soon but before it does I would love to learn a little more about the show ... was anyone here at the gig ? I assume it was pre-girls ? Who or what are Deaf AIDS Jump ?

Thanks!

It's amazing how these bits of memorabilia keep popping up, maybe Joanne and Susan were in the audience? That would be something special. Get the League to sign it and it will be worth a lot more.

Ha ha Subhuman ... yes indeed although most of my signed merchandise has struggled to sell well on eBay :(

Now i do have my "Ooh La La La" sign from the Live at the Dome DVD signed, but even financial stress wont persuade me to part with that one :)

Hospital Worker - I wonder if this gig had anything to do with the hospital Mr O worked at? Perhaps it was a benefit gig for the Thornbury Annexe hospital?

Ah I remember this now from the Dome Video, so were these signs handed out in the foyer for a lucky few, or what? I remember thinking that the sign shown on the video had been made by a fan. =|

I think Redblue100 did them up for himself rather than as a Massive thing, but he can tell you better than I. The only "group" Massive things I remember were the underwear being thrown on stage (which from memory Simon wasn't entirely impressed with), and another evening when we all held up face masks of Beevers. I got all of them - including DB, Neil, Nic and Rob - to sign mine (I think it was Joanne that added the eyelashes, and Nic the moustache):

I did indeed make the sign after a random moment of inspiration!!

If I remember correctly at the time DB was unimpressed with me as Susan laughs and it messed up the recording or something like that...

Happy times :)

You had to be there. A regular member of the Massive (she doesn't post on here any more) who worked with that sort of thing had a load of them made up with THL stuff printed on them. It wasn't just plain underwear - that would be ridiculous! ;)

Ahhh yes. Was that at Ipswich around 2003 or 4? A gag that sadly didn't really come off as Oakey refused to pick them up (but who can blame him!)

Wasn't Ipswich. I've only ever been to Ipswich once and that was for Palace (we won 2-1). I think it was oop north: Leicester or Nottingham maybe??

Ahhh, memories...(even if i wasn't there! I remember all the preparation going on for it at the time...)
I do have photos of the undies (pre-throw) and the photo was dated 20.12.04. Don't know if that was the actual show date though. I'm sure someone would have photos from the actual event?
Good memories from a time when we felt extra close to the band.

The referee now has to step in and separate the two old men and their battle on (lost) memories - there were TWO incidents of Knickers-gate!

Yeah the Massive seems to be seriously depleted now if not actually defunct, and there doesn't seem to be that game for laugh attitude at gigs any more. There was a great feeling of optimism for quite a few years after Secrets come out. I blame the 2008 recession when people had to find new jobs or emigrate, that sort of took the wind out of the Massive sail.

Well, for me it's still 'within' and I made loads of friends and more or less still communicate with them in one way or another - so defunct is probably too big a word - I blame age!
