March 2017

Postby JJ » Wed Mar 01, 2017 3:33 am

February has come and gone.

Summer festivals draw nearer, and the clamour for commercially unsuccessful albums to be re-released in various forms gathers momentum... :p

In the re-runs of Pointless that we get down here, one of the categories on yesterday's show was "Bands that have had the biggest selling single of the Year". To which JJ instantly popped up with "Yooman League," which was of course a pointless answer because most of the fuckwits that get asked in order to provide the number clearly have a memory the length of a gnat's willy.

Welcome to March!

Might not be a memory problem, perhaps they just didn't know: heavy metal fans, prog rockers, SAW fans etc. Not sure I knew myself, because I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of new wave band statistics, would have guessed though.

So let's get this straight... you post on this forum every day, but you don't know that DYWM was the biggest selling single of the year? Jeepers man, it's the 28th biggest selling single of all time in the UK!! :p

This is a great pub quiz question (and I'm going to give you the answer):
Of the top 10 selling singles of all time in the UK, only one band/artist has more than one entry in that top 10? Is it...
The Beatles? Nope.
Elvis? Nope.
OK, what about the Spice Girls? Nope.
Blimey, errr...Elton John? Nope, keep going.
Oh I know - Bryan Adams!? Don't be daft...
Boney M? Yep.

Like I said, great quiz question, and if you're at a boring dinner or something you can pop it into the conversation just like a nice morello cherry into a drink. Plop. You're welcome.

Correct I didn't know that, how would I know given until 1995 I only had a passing interest in rock and pop. I was busy doing other things: work, caving, sub-aqua and motor sport etcetera. In 1995 I had an on the road to Damascus type of moment only it involved Octopus.

Just to set the record straight I come to the forum because I really love the music, collecting facts about my favourite band isn't my thing, still after all the fuss I might just remember that DYWM is 28th in the most bought singles chart.

Personally I was aware it was one of the biggest sellers of all time in the UK (1.5m sales wasn't it?) but I didn't know it was the biggest selling single of the year either.

The reason for that is that its chart run straddled two years (1981/82) and I always assumed that, as its sales were divided over two calendar years, it was outsold in both those years (by Dexy's Midnight Runners in 1982, certainly).

Where as dywm was the biggest selling single released in 1981?

1980 - Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me
1981 - DYWM
1982 - Dexys - Come On Eileen

DYWM was the 5th biggest selling single in the 1980s, Tainted Love was the 11th.

So John how do you remember all of these facts, prodigious memory or big spreadsheet?

Neither. I only knew DYWM was the biggest seller of 81 & 28th biggest seller of all time (actually, last I knew it was 25th, but it's subsequently been overtaken by a few). I just looked the rest of it up to answer octopus's question.

Never heard of Nick Fury before, brother of Billy perhaps. Wonder why Philip's name is starred?

He's a Marvel super hero.

If this release is any indication, he should stick to the day job.

(I have a copy, mind. It might be the worst record I own.)

A lot of you have probably seen this already but someone found the original magazine article that features the photograph used for the cover of Travelogue:

Thanks to Tony & Sean for bringing it to my attention.

I'm not disputing that it was the biggest seller released in 1981, but I'm surprised it was the biggest seller during the year surely as it was only available for 6 weeks of it. But maybe it was, even more of a great achievement if that was the case.

I think they base these 'of all time' things on the release date Ian.
