Would have preferred the more intimate Wolverhampton Civic as it's usually a standing gig but apparently the Civic's being refurb'ed in December - Mind you, bigger venue shows that they can still pull plenty of fans in so its all good.

Easier for me to get to too so win-win on this date.

Mind you, explaining to the better half that THL have scheduled a concert on her birthday yet again was a sticky point (good job she tolerates my needs ;)

After reading all the reviews I jumped on a plane and went to the Birmingham gig last night. Really glad I did. Too wrecked this morning to go through it all. Bit of a concern for next gigs as Phil was a bit crokey Oakey last night but only became evident towards the end of gig. He even apologised after TTTDAMO for any bum notes.

Arrived in a very wet and soggy Birmingham yesterday afternoon and spent a few hours doing some Christmas shopping at the Xmas market.

We left our hotel and started to walk up to the Barclaycard Arena via the canal and just couldn't believe the size of the arena itself and the volume of crowds heading towards it. It felt like a real happening event. Even Susan mentioned during the gig that this was the biggest gig of the tour and I believe there was approx 5,500 people at the gig last night.
Because we booked the tickets at the last minute we were literally as far away from the stage as was humanly possible. I think we were in the Upper circle row LL and were lucky to even get those seats.

We arrived just minutes before Blancmange took to the stage opening their set with the brilliant 'The Day Before You Came'. I thought their set was fantastic and his voice was really powerful. Shame that it was only a 40 minute set but based on what we got tonight I'd love to see a full Blancmange gig in the near future.

The League's opening with Being Boiled was a brilliant start to the gig. Those beats are hard to resist and already people were up on their feet dancing even up in the Gods where we were. The hits came thick and fast and I have to say it was a stellar set. There were some odd moments with fairly long gaps between some of the songs which kind of killed a bit of the atmosphere.

Loved hearing 'Filling Up With Heaven', 'Stay With Me Tonight' & 'Soundtrack To A Generation' live. Last time I heard SWMT was at the Royal Albert Hall on the Octopus tour when Philip announced it as their new single. For me, I don't think 'Sky' worked live and 'One Man' was also a low point. I would have replaced these with 'All I Ever Wanted' and 'Never Let Me Go' to keep the energy up and 'Empire State Human' would also have been a welcome bit of fun. With Sky, Human, Louise & One Man it was just too many ballads and pulled the energy down.

The crowd was really into it and were singing along with gusto. It's always a hair raising moment when you get a huge crowd singing along to DYWM. The stage setting was brilliant and very effective. Easily the best stage set I've seen so far and definitively a step up from previous tours. I would drop some of the 80's references though (Pac Man, Rubix Cube etc) and have more modern images from current events but that's just a minor criticism.

Really enjoyed the show and I'm so glad I made the effort to go. It certainly wasn't the best League gig I've been to but it was a really great gig and a very professional production. I personally HATE seated gigs and always feel detached somehow when I'm at them and that's the main reason the gig didn't quite hit the dizzy heights of other shows I've been to but that wasn't The League's fault.

I'd give the show a 7 out of 10 for the following reasons: Too many energy sucking ballads, seated gig AND I missed Nic's energy on the stage - it wasn't the same without him. Well done to The League for stepping it up though. I won't attend another League seated gig again though. Next time it has to be a standing gig - there's just a totally different energy at them.

Pic I took last night:

I really didn't think I'd be able to get over for a show this year so waited until the last minute to book flights and tickets and Birmingham was the only show not sold out. Will only do standing gigs next time. Why go to a gig and sit through it? Does not compute especially with bands like The League. You gotta have a boogie.

Great review, thanks, and to think they did it all again an evening later in Plymouth. It sounds as though we had the same set list, but the slower songs weren't necessarily a minus for me. Glad you enjoyed it.

Brilliant review cs15 :) Appreciate your honest opinions and attention to detail. Thanks for the photos which provide a good sense of the scale and impact of the stage set.

Good review but there's no way only 3,000 there. The people working in the venue told us they had 'north of 5k and close to 5.5k' in that night.

From the review: "Oakey's voice may not stand too close a musical inspection these days, especially on its own, but blended with the girls' and buried in layers of synths it's a winning combination". What? In Plymouth he was pitch perfect, and I'm not tone deaf either! And from the reviews here it seems he was just as good in Birmingham so I dunno what that's all about.

As stated above towards the end of the gig he was a bit hoarse and apologised for a few bum notes after singing TTTDAMO. But it was literally 2 or 3 times throughout a 90 min set that he struggled and even then it was barely noticeable. I doubt that even 1% of the audience picked up on it and my wife didn't even notice.
