Removing the R in 'Revolution' and adding a question mark which for some reason lacks on the original one, was most enjoyable - thanks, Stephen :D

The "problem" with DM is that you soooo want it to be good, and when really really really trying to find something awesome in a track – and realise you can't – the dissapointment sets in. For me it boils down to the rock-attitude which they so brilliantly succeded with on SOFAD, but now fucks up every time as they totally miss the point of harmonies and (for the lack of words) a multi-layered/structual approach to music - a thing Alan was a master at. Nowadays its just minimalistic and very dull. What happend to the high-pitched lead synth and the strings-section?

1. Ditch the Blues - we've heard it now!
2. Stop singing with that bloody sneering voice on EVERY track. There was a b-side (Ghost?), where he sang with his "normal" voice - ace track!
3. Add some harmonies, strings - just more layers/variation.

Did you tell him he was bonkers? Just using THL as the obvious example, pretty much everyone sees Dare as their zenith. So if they'd left it at that there'd be no Octopus; no Secrets; no Credo; no I Need Your Loving! Holy cow!

Oh yes he was bonkers  The lead singer in a Glam Rock covers band. Yes that's the fatal flaw in a nutshell. Perhaps a better concept would be eliminating bands/acts before they got signed so we never had to deal with their noise pollution. Imagine a world without Michael Bolton, Simply Red, SAW, Chris de Smug etc =D

I quite like Simple Red, not everything of course, but they/he did do some very good songs IMO.

Oh and SAW weren't a band/act just a production outfit who specialised into polishing awful into mediocre.

Roadblock, completely passed this by at the time. Having listened to it on YouTube I'm not surprised, rather typical of their formulaic Hi-NRG output. Not my type of music, haven't we rather wondered off thread by the way.

There's a review of the new album that's been posted on the Palace forum. Doesn't read well!

There's a very valued poster on the dm forum I visit who's a journalist (in Finland) and has heard the album (once) and described it as DM's most depressing and non commercial album yet. That's not to say it's bad but maybe it will take time to sink ones teeth into!

It really is an awful song. Good sentiment but awful tune. Genuinely can't listen to it the whole way through. If this is the tempo of the entire album (and the reviews so far seem to point that way) then I'll pass on it. No surprise that WTR disappeared without trace.

If you have low expectations for the new DM album, then fear not - your expectations were met.....

I was talking to a guy who heard the whole album on Monday and his one word summary was: Boring.
He said that WTR is actually one of the better tracks on the album so my expectations are beyond extremely low.

Just minutes ago I picked up my copy from the postman this morning of the deluxe edition of new album 'Spirit'

The album on disc one is just over 49 mins whilst the bonus disc with remixes weighs in at 27 mins so but my maths I reckon you could have fitted the entire content onto a single disc. This is just the same way they did it for the so-called 'special edition' of "Delta Machine".

Anyway I'll have a first listen to 'Spirit' later this afternoon... :/

Lets hope you won't be too disappointed Sarah, it's probably okay just not up to their usual standard. But then I like Exciter!

I really love the feel of the pleasingly satisfying 'Spirit' and amongst the twelve tracks on offer standout songs on first listen are "Cover Me" which I think has a Trans-Europe-Express type travelling feel to it and there is definitely great emotive pace to "So Much Love".

IMO definitely money well spent... a fine addition to my music collection and great to have the guys back on top form once more!!! =D =D =D

Does she like stuff that you have already advised as being "okay just not up to their usual standard"? I can imagine the conversation:

Subhuman: "Here you are dear, a shiny copy of Depeche Mode's new album, Spirit. I hope you like it, although in my opinion it's only okay; not up to their usual standard."
Mrs. Subhuman: "Oh, that's a shame. When did you hear it to form that opinion, David?"
Subhuman: "Well it's funny you should ask that Sandra! As it happens, errrrm, well... I haven't actually heard it."
Mrs. Subhuman: "Opinions are like arseholes, David. Everybody has one."

My copy of Spirit arrived in the post yesterday. I haven't yet had a chance to listen to it, so as a result I am unable to offer any opinion as to whether it is only okay and not up to their usual standard. :p

Been spinning the album for a fair while and I have to say I like it! A lot! It’s different but still very much DM. It strikes me as an album they’ve made to please no one but themselves and that’s how it should be. At times almost like an updated soundtrack to Twin Peaks. Big credit to James Ford for taking care of the sound. Much more ooomph to the beats and bass. Some of the more distinctive basslines reminds me of their early days (like Any Second Now) and could be handplayed by Fletch live like in the good ol’ days. There may not be another world conquering pop hit, but can we really expect that? For me there’s plenty of hooks, melodies and wellconstructed, catchy choruses to keep me satisfied. And I love the extended instrumental endings on a couple of the songs. New Order does this very well and I always hope DM follow that patch and thankfully they delivered a couple of corkers on this album. The tracks work very well as an album but after a while I’ve started to skip Worst Crime and Eternal. Stand out tracks for me is Going Backwards, WTR, Cover Me (fantastic Clean-esque ending), You Move (has a bit of My Joy vibe about it), Scum, Poorman and No More. Fail is a refreshing new(ish) sound for Gore, nice to hear him backed with a proper drumbeat for once. My sons aged 8 and 10 are running round singing Where’s The Revolution which is always a good indication of hit potential in a DM song :)

WTR was pants (but the remix was decent) and it's put me off buying Spirit. I'll take a listen on Spotify and judge wether to buy it or not. Has it charted well? They usual go Top 3 or so don't they with album releases?
