Gary Numan

Gary's Micromusic concert video is finally being released in April on dvd! Widely regarded by Numan fans as the best gig that he ever staged this is the first time the show will be available on dvd with remastered sound and vision. Check out the link for more info and a clip - http://www.numan.co.uk/box/news.html

Gary's London concert of The Pleasure Principle 09 tour was filmed last December and is due to be released this year on dvd and blu-ray. His very first concert video, The Touring Principle, was also re-released last year on dvd. Once again the sound and vision were remastered and there is a nu interview looking back at this period of his career.

I loved Gary Numan when i was 10 years old.....and still do, he's an amazing musician and although people don't give him credit, he was a pioneer of the sound of electronica..just like Kraftwerk, Ultravox and The Human League.
I really wish Gary could have a HUGE comeback (mainstream) and I loved Sugababes for using his 'Electric' song!

An interesting offering http://www.cherryred.co.uk/cherrypop/product.php?display=sharpenuman#crpop67 but I am very disappointed that the extended remix of "Change Your Mind" is not being offered, without it this is not an October 2010 title that I will be keen to add to my collection!

I shall be getting this album, it's a very rare one to find in it's original form...shame about the 12" of 'Change Your Mind' being omitted.

Hook your Hi-Fi up to your PC, preferabally aux out to the soundcards input, use Audacity or something similar to record and edit bits out, you now have your own MP3 for nowt. I did this with a lot of my records including my 12" of that one too.
The path of Least resistance....is easier if things are connected!

I like deluxe editions and usually buy them along with the standard release, Depeche Mode & Erasure have excelled at this formatting and its always value for money.
I shall go for the deluxe Gary Numan album, and see whats on that 'Super Deluxe' edition, it would have to be something extremely special to warrant that price!! But I'd like one.

That was a good interview, Gary still doesn't himself credit.
He was right though, The Human League, Ultravox were doing the electronic music before he was =)

You would sort of trust GN fans to keep this up to date - never been a real fan, but when Motor delivers the music - it's feckin' fantastic...oh, and so is the album:

I don't care - I guess he's doing the vocoded singing, that doesn't change the fact it's a AWESOME track....but will not be surprised if it's a bit to hard for sensitive and fragile listeners ;)

I've finally listened to this track today and I like it but not as much as Stig. The video reminds me of the one used for the live performances of Night People. It's very electro and I would much prefer if Gary went in this direction but that's highly unlikely to happen. It's not hard at all on the ears. It's far lighter than his current stuff. I would love to see Gary collaborate with TOY and THL. He has worked with Andy Gray and the results have been excellent. They were supposed to work on an album together but it hasn't happened...yet.

Are Toy still around then? I thought that the Secrets experience might have discouraged them, the not a commercial success bit I mean.

Thanks very much for the link Kevin, sounds like a great track. I've lost track of Numan since the 'Pure' album. I think this track is not as heavy and doom laden as much of the content of 'Pure' (Numan was definitely having a 'bad day' on that album) but it is, as you say, still the HARDCORE sound which typifies the current Numan sound. On the strenth of 'I Am Dust' I think the new album will be well worth waiting for!!!

With a new album coming up I’ve been revisiting the back catalogue that I have and although I believe Gary Numan himself isn’t that keen on his 80s output I find much worthy of praise on his 1986 release “Strange Charm”. This was the last title which I replaced my much played audio cassette with a bonus tracks loaded CD release back in 1999.

For me there are three stand out tracks on offer from what I think is largely a forgotten album. I absolutely love the hypnotically seductive feel of opening track “My Breathing”, a six and a half minute song which creates a marvellously evocative soundscape so typical of the decade - for me definitely Numan at his very best. There is definitely the feel of Bill Sharpe’s influence in “New Thing From London Town” with soaring confident synth notes perhaps likened to Human League matched to catchy delivered chorus. That unique Numan atmosphere is prevalent on the title track with relaxed Strange Charm delivered parallel with the fastest repeated phrases from Gary that I think I have heard.

Yeah “Strange Charm” has its draw backs with the repetitive nature of both “The Need” and “I Can’t Stop” (a chart single I believe) rather grating on my nerves and certainly haven’t improved with age. I suspect “I Can’t Stop” is a quite a tour favourite with long term fans particularly when he delivers the lyrics “I’m back and I’m proven. I’m back and I’m strong”. However on balance I rather like the album and as a 1999 CD release the album is further enhanced by five bonus tracks of which for me “Faces” is the strongest.

I listened to it on Sunday morning but enjoyed it so much I spun the disc once more on Monday whilst eating my breakfast and was humming/uttering the lyrics for most of the day whilst out cycling.
