Dubstar

As there are some fans of Sarah Blackwood here, and Dubstar are recording again, I thought we ought to have a thread.

I loved Dubstar, and only one of a few groups whose B sides were just as good as the A. Would have loved to see them live and was very sad when they'd split. Thought them reforming again had fell through though, with Sarah not wanting to do it, I may be wrong?

The forthcoming Parralox remix album "Metropolism" has a new mix by Dubstar:

You are wrong. Sarah does want to do it, and Client's split has facilitated that.

I saw Dubstar live supporting Erasure and thought they were poor.

I saw them live a couple of times and Sarah was much less out-going in Dubstar than she became in Client.

I think they had a few great songs like Not So Manic Now. Actually a lot of the first album is really good. No More Talk from the second album is a great track too. But their final album was terrible and their 'body of work' to date is not a spot on Client in my view.

Having said that, because Sarah has such a great voice, I'll reserve my judgement and hope that they come back with some good stuff. And a recent picture of Sarah recoding vocals for the album showed her surrounded by lots of synths, so that has to be a good sign.

The only Dubstar song I like is 'Anywhere' which is excellent, and where I can "hear" Sarah smiling as she sings it.

..so you can hear her smile in Client songs?

I am totally opposite of this; I heard nothing to smile about in their music, and liked perhaps one track by them. A very simple attempt to make electropop. I found the whole "lets play it cold" concept a bit worn out - I know some will say, it was tongue-in-cheek - still doesn't change anything, I'm afraid.

Dubstar on the other hand is upliftning straight-forward pop songs, and I hope the new stuff will be good.

No, I don't think I ever heard Client songs in that way. Even the track 'Happy' was far from that.

I agree JJ, Client songs were definitely not about the 'joys of spring'. Even their really poppy songs like Don't Call Me Baby had a very dark undercurrent to them - which I loved. Mind you I don't think Dubstar's music, and especially their lyrics, was a barrel of laughs either.

Even if there's isn't actually a pair of them in their line up, Clients sound had much more balls than Dubstars! I liked Dubstars first album when it came out and even went to a concert with them back in the mid 90s. But they lost me with their second album and listening to them now, the songs are catchy enough in the chorus, but I find the production mindnumbingly boring.

Has anyone heard any of the new Dubstar songs, I dug out their first album recently, copied to tape (my eldest son having walked off with the cd), and really enjoyed it.

There's not much about Dubstar's new material on the internet but they are playing the Lexington on the 15th March. Tickets sold out I think.

Thanks Jet, they sounded so good I'm wondering if it's really live or miming to the single?

There is supposed to be new material coming, is anyone from here going to the gig,
ED?

That's good to know, Dubstar have been pretty quiet since they reformed.

Was walking into the Gordano services on the M5 near Portishead today and walking out was a Sarah Blackwood lookalike. I nearly fell over!

They did a gig with THL last week, perhaps it's from that.

Does anyone know what is happening with Dubstar, they are conspicuously quiet at the moment after last year's signs of something new? Their website and facebook page have no new information, just some new pics on facebook.

Which year? 2016? I simply don't get the deal with them - they upload old photos on their FB, no news, and their official website is quite a mess of links to videos easier found directly on youtube.

Last message from Sarah was july 2011:

"we have been writing and recording together again and have amassed a large amount of new material. We are currently at the mixing stage; it always seems to be the last lap that takes the longest, but I think the results will be worth the wait. We can't wait to get out and play it all live too."

Yeah their PR makes the Human League look very professional. Perhaps it's another clever stoke, like Secrets; "it's so secret nobody's heard it".
