New Gold Dream (81, 82, 83, 84) by Simple Minds. Don't know how / why I hadn't heard this before now. Also I had no idea that Usura - Open Your Mind had such a massive sample of it.

Not at all. Twangy geetars and real drums were not my thing back then even more than they're still not my thing now. Only difference 30 years on is that at the beginning of my sixth decade (shudder) I'm now a little more tolerant. The word 'little' is the important one in that sentence. Might be why I've been listening to a little (same word, same importance) Black Sabbath recently. :)

I only bought Gary Numan's 'The Pleasure Principle' 2 weeks ago. Same as JJ I'm thinking how have I never heard this album before? It's the mutz nutz. I've played it about 50 times in the last 2 weeks.

There are always so-called "essential" albums that somehow get missed. For example I don't own the following:

Thompson Twins - Quick Step & Side Kick
ABC - Lexicon of Love
OMD - Architecture & Morality or Dazzle Ships

Well a body can't buy every good album and I'd never heard of New Gold Dream before although the single sounds good and I like Simple Minds but I've only got four of their 14? studio albums. It's a similar story with Tears For Fears, OMD, Blancmange, Numan, Erasure etc etc. Also there are a few excellent bands from whom I've only got a GH album! I think the League, Yazoo and Visage are the only "new wave/electronic" bands where I have a full set of the studio albums.

TFF is another one - I own GH, but not The Hurting or Songs From The Big Chair.

I can only presume that everyone has at least 1 copy of Japan's 'Tin Drum'? Masterpiece. If you don't own a copy then do yourself a favour and grab one ASAP. 'Quiet Life' comes a very close second. The synths are amazing.

I own no albums by Japan and only have a couple of their tracks from compilation cd's. Never been into them, tbh.

I think David Sylvian's voice is a marmite type of voice for a lot of people. Tin Drum though is just an outstanding piece of work. I lost interest in his solo work after 'Gone To Earth'. He kinda forgot about melodies and songs and became all about experimentation. Still a brilliant artist.

Glad to hear that Patric :) That's the first Numan album I bought and still my favourite. 'Metal' is one of his finest songs, should have been a single and a fantastic video was made by Tyne Tees for a TV show back in 79. That's his best video ever IMHO.

Never liked Japan and I always think of Sylvian as the Selina Scott of synthpop. Arrogant, cold, deluded and thought no-one was good enough for him. Last I heard he was living in a remote location in New England admitting that he spends most of his time alone.

I do agree with the comments above that there are classic albums which I have not heard at all and I think this is the year to change that. For example I only own 2 Pet Shop Boys compilations so there's loads of their material I haven't heard.

Absolutely agree. Crank it up loud - it's every bit as good as Cars. In fact for me, only the album version of Sister Surprise beats it for me in terms of Numan.

I'm now listening to La Roux - Uptight Downtown. Great track off a pretty good album.

I'm still listening to some of those La Roux tracks off the second album. Cruel Sexuality and Sexotheque in particular are really excellent.

I am currently listening to Alexander O'Neal - What Can I Say To Make You Love Me.

Ahhh, those good old days of the late 80s local dives/clubs! I remember one quality establishment in sarf London. I'd gone into the gents, and there were a few other blokes in there lined up at the urinal. In walks some young lady - off her trolley - demanding an inspection of all the equipment on display. At which point one of the blokes suggested that seeing as she was asking that, it was only fair that she also put her wares on display. "OK" she replied. So up came the top. No bra. Like I said, it was a classy place. :)

For the last 4 days I've been listening to the new Marc Almond/Soft Cell collection 'Hits & Pieces'. The best thing about it is the less well known songs such as 'Jacky', 'The Idol' & 'A Lover Spurned' are just as amazing as the Hits.
