2 0 1 5 Calendars here! (xtra)

Postby sarah t » Sat Sep 20, 2014 12:39 pm

For those non-League moments I've put together a selection of alternate calendar designs for 2015. There are sixteen in total, twelve revised from last year plus four brand new ones, three of which the images used are sourced from YouTube.

Here is the first half...

Right lets finish this off!

Firstly the four revisions....

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e364/sarahta1102/XTA15-12-B_zps26794693.jpg

and now the four new ones that I'm so pleased with I thought I'd put some words with...

Further to the long running saga I had of trying to get a reasonably priced copy of the re-release of the ‘Don’t Suppose’ CD album I was checking through promos on YouTube when I came across this one. The unlikely sight of such a hip and trendy youngster with spiky hair and streetwise clothes togging up in whites and taking part on a cricket match against a background of an English country house seemed such a bizarre atypical sight. I thought it was a good narrative as Limahl’s character does his best at attempting to impress a girl, particularly against a rival for her affections, through what appears to be his less than successful turn with the bat. As well as the main image I’m happy how the central identifier and left side collage of images captures the essence of what is for me a hitherto unknown but quite good fun promo.

Feeling that they needed another design in addition to the iconic space age ‘Wishing’ which I presume gets more music channel airplay than any other another search of YouTube yielded this distinctive and highly appropriate promo. I love the central translucent electric guitar overlaid against a genuine ‘flock of sea gulls’ image I’ve used, a key identifier I think. Taking the four band members to a windswept coastal setting for me works very well, a quite dramatic locale that seems ideally suited to the pleasingly memorable pop song. Searching through all their promos has certainly wetted my appetite to check out their four studio albums which have been re-released, with bonus tracks by Cherry Red Records and no doubt have fascinating well researched, colourfully designed, fully comprehensive booklets as is so typical of the high standard this company continue to offer with each new release.

On a previous edition of ‘Forgotten 80s’ I’m sure Matthew Rudd alluded to the perception that Japan fail to get enough airplay of their back catalogue nowadays which is a great shame. I always smile when the Absolute 80s radio station program occasionally pulls out a song from those far off days early in the decade and wanted to honour them with a calendar design. Naturally it was the oriental imagery connected with ‘Tin Drum’ that I suspect they are best remembered and there is no finer example of this than in their distinctively iconic promo for ‘Visions of China’ from which I selected some key images.

Sadly never really getting commercial success in the UK this British band were apparently massive elsewhere, particularly in America but for me their early 80s songs were what fired my interest. The strongest example of this is the beautifully seductive ballad ‘Saved by Zero’. I wasn’t familiar with the promo however seeing it on YouTube it seemed to me to capture perfectly the New Romantic type style of the early 80s that they had. In the narrative lead singer Cy Town is cast as a struggling artist whom at one point we see drawing a pencil sketch of the figure which appears on the cover of their ‘Shuttered Room’ album whilst his three fellow band members look down at him from outside the studio. A bit like other groups like Duran Duran and OMD you see the four lads are seen at one point sitting round a table having a meal laughing and joking with each other. However the overall tone of the promo, for me at least, is more serious in tone and seems to focus on the struggling artist attempting to make a living coupled with the central image of an exhibition of his work for potential customers. I’ve got the ‘ultimate collection’ greatest hits package on CD and whilst it is pleasantly enjoyable listening it is for me the initial tracks like ‘Saved By Zero’ where they were so distinctive, memorable and appealing.

Hi Sarah, I'd like to comment but I'm having problems downloading images from photobucket at the moment. I think this a problem with photobucket and not anything that you've done.

That's bizarre as I've just clicked on a few links, in this thread, and there is no problem at all. Maybe it is something to do with your computer???????????

Problem is gone away now, some sort of compatibility issue between photo bucket and my computer. May be a coincidence but while this was happening I was having a problem with my internet signal dropping out occasionally.
