If you have any particular bugbears / issues, stick it in here, then Matt and I can have a look at it and a) see if anything can be done about it or b) explain why it happens.

I think it looks absolute great - cheers for the great work guys! Great idea with the flickr images.

One small issue - I don't understand why animated avatars aren't allowed - I know it's possible, but not above 10KB, which is the same as "not possible".

I don't think there's a technical answer Stig, other than to say less clutter = quicker site. But Matt might have a more full answer for you.

well, the "less clutter = quicker site" is still so very very wrong. Same thing applied to the (now) old board. The board loads, whether or not the images are ready - they just comes a bit later, IF they are hosted on a slow site and/or the images are huge. "Normal" animated avatars aren't that huge in file size - 50+ KB - which is less than practically ANY live photos ever been posted in the "old" board.

If anyone still challenge the idea of the "less clutter = quicker site" - go to Beevers new images - press CTRL-F5 (which forces the pictures to be loaded again, rather than fetched from the cache), and you'll see the board loads BEFORE the images.

Rant over! :)

Like I said, mine was a non-technical answer! If you want a full technical answer, Matt's your man!

It's okay - just needed to set you straight!

I think I know the answer - avatars are uploaded to the site, rather than linked - meaning there's a limit to the amount of files on each board. You still have to host your own images/photos for inclusion in posts, though.

I don't seem to be able to laod an avatar to the site. I know that most people would be delighted NOT to see a Boy George avatar but it's frustrating the hell out of me.

It's almost certainly to do with the size of it, cs15.

Let me have a look at the avatars situation and see what can be done... It might be possible to enable remote linking, but this would require some code-wrangling... Let me get back to you on this!

Cheers for that, Matt...

...and while you're at it; is it possible to make links open in a new window instead of using the window you're currently in? I can't figure out why it's not possible in the resource thread - and also the EY link above - soooo much easier than going back and forth....and I'm a lazy bastard.

Nice work Matt, JJ. So far so good...

Suggestion:

Make the big banner at the top a clicky link to the index page.

2 things:

1. Promotion of the site? saw JJ posted info on the DM board - would it be an idea for people to post here, when and where they've publiced it?

2. Payment!?

There are tons of features to this new board - if you're geeky enough, check out the discussion forum on PunBB boards. Do a search on your issue, and you'll most likely find others asking the very same.

1. The "open in new window" is a huuuge subject, and there is a work around.
2. Chatroom is possible - but is not integrated default.
3. newest post first, is possible, but I'm not sure it can be done individually - it has to be made global.

Yes, it's rather cunningly called "Live" ;)

In fact, at both the top and bootom of the posts section, there is a link to Index. If the banner at the top was also that, you'd still have to go to the top of the page to click on it. I'm finding that I'm using the one at the bottom of the last post to go back to Index.

If you click on [new posts] on the thread you want to read, it takes you to the newest post since you last looked :)
