Thanks for the encouragement Pauline, I'm actually in two minds at the moment on whether to stick with purely synth bands or go to the more inclusive electro which includes almost any band with synth(s) which isn't rock or heavy metal etc. It will just take a bit longer as there are many more bands to consider including in the top ten.

c15: and by the way Numan isn't a synth band, too many guitars and is one person a band anyway?

JJ, thanks for your recent contribution, even though I don't understand it!

There will now be a short interlude.

The VVVs were arrows. You wanted to know why it was all too hard. The post I was pointing to is (another) example of why.

Paralysis by analysis, and you haven't even started yet!

Well I agree about Blancemange, AFOS I'm not sure about will have to listen to them. Toyah definitely not, sort of punk rock new wave crossover, I think if you include Toyah you would have to include Siouxsie and the Banshees and Adam Ant.

The current delay is due to me getting rid of the not synth pop bands from my list and listening to those left to determine if they're synthy enough to avid criticism.

Fair point about Toyah I guess but definitely you should consider A Flock of Seagulls, best and well known song is of course (Wishing) I Had A Photograph of You.

Another group perhaps worth considering is China Crisis???

I'm suffering from Synth Pop overload at the moment, will have to listen to Motorhead or Primal Scream for a bit.

If it's a pure 80's synth pop list then you can't have Tubeway Army's Are Friends Electric? as it came out in '79 as did Cars. You'd have to go with singles from Telekon onwards.
As for Spandau Ballet, they're about as synth pop as 1 Direction!

I think you can include the bulk of Savage too which was a good return to weird synth pop. In The Garden has some synth stuff too but it's used more for 'decoration' that forming the bulk of the songs the way it does on Sweet Dreams and Touch.

For what's worth here are my top 10 of 80s synth pop

The Sound Of The Crowd - The Human League
Souvenir - Orchestral Manœuvres In The Dark
Homosapien - Pete Shelley
Do You Dream In Colour? - Bill Nelson
I Travel - Simple Minds
Dr. Mabuse - Propaganda
Underpass - John Foxx
Lawnchairs - Our Daughter's Wedding
Fade To Grey - Visage
The Thin Wall - Ultravox

That's a great list Ian
Recognised them all apart from lawnchairs..... Looked it up on YouTube and it sounds very familiar as well as being omd/numan/silicon teens ish. Did Robert Marlow record it I wonder JJ. Sounds like his kind of thing.

Rob never did Lawnchairs. I LOVE Our Daughters Wedding. I listen to them a lot, and Lawnchairs is far from their best song imho. Every track on their EP Digital Cowboy is excellent.

Yes I agree, The Digital Cowboy EP is great. Someone (I'm not sure who but I'm guessing vocalist Keith Silva) put out a 7 track digital EP/mini album in 2013 under the ODW name. I'm friends with Scott Simon from the band on Facebook and he's still very proud of the band, and I think rightly so.

For goodness sake Dave, JFDI if you’re going to do it!

I’ve been giving this some thought. Firstly, what were my top 20 synth (NB – not synth-pop) bands or artists of the 80s, and secondly what do I think were each of their best 3 tracks from that decade only (not just singles), in order. Mine:

Yazoo
Only You
Don’t Go
Situation

Depeche Mode
Never Let Me Down Again (Split Mix)
The Landscape Is Changing
Behind The Wheel (album version)

The Human League
Love Action (I Believe In Love)
Don’t You Want Me
Mirror Man

Heaven 17
Who’ll Stop The Rain (Dub Mix)
Let Me Go
Temptation

Erasure
A Little Respect
Push Me Shove Me (Extended As Far As Possible Mix)
Weight Of The World

Kraftwerk
Computer Love (album version)
Numbers
Tour De France

Howard Jones
What Is Love
Conditioning (b-side version)
Hide & Seek (Long Version)

Hard Corps
Je Suis Passee (Extended)
Respirer
Porte Bonheur

Bronski Beat
Smalltown Boy
Ain’t Necessarily So
Need A Man Blues

I Start Counting
Letters To A Friend (Sunrise Mix)
Adman’s Dream (Admix)
Still Smiling (Extended)

Gary Numan
Sister Surprise (Extended)
Call Out The Dogs
Metal (or was that 79?)

Visage
I’m Still Searching
Night Train (Dance Mix)
Fade To Grey

Robert Marlow
No Heart (Extended Version)
That Dangerous Age
The Face of Dorian Gray

Our Daughters Wedding
No-One’s Watching
Target For Life
Dance Floor

OMD
Souvenir
Messages
Enola Gay

Eurythmics
I Could Give You (A Mirror) (b-side version)
Revenge
The Walk

Nitzer Ebb
Shame
Join In The Chant
Smear Body

Soft Cell
Bedsitter
Entertain Me
Torch

Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder
Together In Electric Dreams
Be My Lover Now
Valerie

The Thompson Twins

Wow, you guys have been thinking, unfortunately I don't have sufficient spare time at the moment to do justice to this thread. So you'll just have to give me time to sort things out. Sorry.

If you're referring to the b-side of Sweet Dreams, ICGY(AM) is just a gazillion times better than the album version.

I don't know Let's Just Close Our Eyes - was it just another version of The Walk (seeing as that's the lyric)?

Well I've come to the conclusion that JJ's idea of each person nominating their top synth bands and then giving the three best tracks for each band is the way to go. Rules are:-

1. Nominate any number of 80's synth bands up to a maximum of twenty.

2. Nominate up to a maximum of three 80's tracks.

This will be much easy than what I was originally proposing. Blow I'm going to have to do my own nominations now!

Yes the b-side version of Mirror is infinitely better than the original.
Let's Just Close Our Eyes is a more synthy version of The Walk, it's on the 12" of Love Is A Stranger.

Oh ok. I've got the 7"single of The Walk. It has an excellent b-side called Step On The Beast.

They had so many great tracks in the early 80s hidden away. The remaster of Sweet Dreams didn't have them all. There's another good one on The Walk 12" Invisible Hands.

He think he qualifies for inclusion here and if I were to pick 'three of the best' I would go for...

Thomas Dolby
1. One of our Submarines is Missing
2. Europa and the Pirate Twins
3. She Blinded Me With Science
